Certified Coding Specialist

As aCertified Coding Specialist, you will work within a Long Term Care Facility and Transitional Acute Care Unit.  Analyze code sets for admits from acute care facilities, lesser levels of care or private settings, as well as maintenance on custodial care residents during stay.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • High school graduate or GED.
  • Knowledgeable in medical terminology, disease processes and pharmacology.

Preferred:

  • Post secondary training in Health Information Technology
  • Long term care or healthcare experience in maintaining clinical records
  • Expertise in ICD-10 CM code analysis with one-year minimum prior coding experience.
  • Knowledge of regulations, accreditation, and professional standards of practice for health information in long‑term care.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION

Required

  • Certified Coder supported by AHIMA or AAPC. Credentialed RHIT/CCS/CCA/ or CPC.

FUNCTIONS

  • Work independently to analyze code sets for entry into the electronic health record.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all resident and facility information at all times, both while on and off duty.
  • Remain current regarding all coding changes adhering to industry standards.
  • Assist Business Office in determining and challenging unpaid or reduced services based on code sets.
  • Work closely with Unit Care Coordinators to evaluate quarterly/annual MDS changes and updates.
  • Become familiar with PDPM reimbursement payments to achieve optimal compensation.
  • Demonstrates the ability to operate PC and utilize several types of relevant software.
  • Proficient with Encoder Software.
  • Ability to use Point Click Care (Electronic Health Record software)
  • Ability to establish regular and ongoing communication with medical and nursing staff.
  • Available for assistance with code additions or revisions when applicable.
