The Assistant Director of Environmental Services performs the day‑to‑day activities of the Housekeeping and Laundry departments in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards pertaining to guidelines and regulations governing Valley Senior Living.  This ensures that the facility is maintained in a clean, safe, and comfortable manner. The Assistant Director of Environmental Services plans, organizes, and executes work activities of Housekeeping, Custodian, and Laundry personnel in order to maintain the highest possible sanitary standards.

  • High school graduate or GED.
  • Minimum of two (2) years housekeeping or laundry experience.

  • Understand and adhere to Valley Senior Living’ Corporate Compliance Standards, Code of Conduct, and all Department/Personnel policies and procedures.
  • Report to supervisor all complaints and concerns made by residents, families, visitors, agencies, staff, etc.
  • Perform assigned tasks in accordance with policies and procedures and as instructed.
  • Comply with established universal precautions and isolation procedures, follow established safety regulations and report all incidents, accidents, hazardous conditions, or equipment to the Director of Environmental Services.
  • Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the Housekeeping, Custodian, and Laundry departments.
  • Coordinate Housekeeping and Laundry services and activities with other related departments (e.g., Dietary, Nursing, Activities, Social Services, etc.)
  • Develop and maintain written job descriptions, performance appraisals, and policies and procedures for each department on the o:drive (O:\Facility Assessment\Job Descriptions\Environmental Services).
  • Interpret each department’s policies and procedures to employees, residents, visitors, government agencies, etc.
  • Develop and participate in the planning, conducting, scheduling, etc., of in-service training classes and on‑the‑job training and orientation programs for Housekeeping, Custodian, and Laundry personnel.
  • Perform administrative duties such as completing necessary forms, reports, evaluations, and processing of invoices and purchase orders.
  • Review the department’s policies and procedure manuals, job descriptions, SDS manuals, etc. at least annually for revisions and make recommendations.
  • Recruit and select Housekeeping, Custodian, and Laundry staff through the process of evaluating employment applications, obtaining references, and interviewing applicants.
  • Maintain current written records of department expenditures and ensure that adequate financial record and cost reports are submitted upon request. Share updates with all departments. Maintain current copies of the SDS sheets for hazardous chemicals books and distribute to appropriate departments.
  • Meet with Housekeeping, Custodian, and Laundry personnel on a regularly scheduled basis and solicit advice concerning the operation of each department and assist in identifying and correcting problem areas and/or the improvement of services.
  • Coach and discipline Housekeeping, Custodian, and Laundry personnel as necessary. Terminate employees when necessary, documenting and coordinating such actions with the Director of Environmental Services and, as necessary, the Director of Human Resources.
  • Inspect storage rooms, utility/janitorial closets, etc., for upkeep and supply control. Pursue cost-saving avenues whenever indicated.
  • Submit incident reports within twenty‑four (24) hours after an incident occurs.
  • Schedule and announce department meeting times, dates, places, etc.
  • Attend Valley Senior Living on 42nd Facility Management meetings.
  • Make inspection of all Housekeeping, Custodial, and Laundry functions to assure that Quality Assurance standards are continually maintained.
  • Supervise Maintenance and Grounds staff in the absence of the Director of Environmental Services.
  • Be knowledgeable of housekeeping, custodial, and laundry practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to labor relations, infection control, hazardous materials, etc.
  • Understand the “Right to Know” regulation.


  • Greet and assist visitors and residents and report suspicious persons or situations to supervisor.
  • Refer difficult and conflicting interactive situations to appropriate supervisor and assist in resolving the problem.
  • Assist with completion of forms and reports that are considered essential functions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Participate and assist in departmental studies and projects as requested.
  • Plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures for Housekeeping, Custodian, and Laundry.

The performance of the essential job functions of this position requires the ability to lift a minimum of 35 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.  Must be able to bend, stoop, lift, stand, and move intermittently throughout the workday and to push a cart and equipment weighing up to 150 pounds.  There is frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighting up to 25 pounds, and must be able to lift up to a maximum of 50 pounds.
